Practical guide to find the right keywords for your product
Practical guide to find the right keywords for your product - part 1
I am running two job boards - Sportekjobs and Teacherjobs. One of the really hard things for every site, but above all for job boards, is attracting enough users so it is interesting for companies posting their job. With this article I want to follow every step from the great Backlinko article about finding the right keywords for your project. You can easily implement this on your product too - I will try to update the article in a couple of months with a chapter about the results and success of implementing new keywords on Sportekjobs.
1. Brainstorm a list of topics related to your product
First of all, I want to rank high on the following keywords: Sportstech || Sportstech Jobs || Sportstechnology Jobs || Sports Analytics Jobs || eSports Jobs || Fantasy sports Jobs || Sports Jobs
The competition for the keywords is obviously not the same but we will take a look at it later on.
2. Use google autosuggest
Make use of google autosuggest to find the right keywords. If we take some of the keywords from my list above I can easily find keywords which are related to mine. From this step I will add the following keywords to my list:
Global sport jobs || sports technology careers || sports tech jobs city xyz || remote eSports jobs
3. Searches related to your product
If you search for a specific keyword always take a look at the end of the search results and add some of the related keywords to your list. For example, in my case, if I search for sports analytics I get a really useful list with related keywords.
Tip: Click on the search related keywords to get even more suggestions.
4. Use reddit
Go to reddit and see if there are subreddits related to your product. Then try to find posts with a lot of comments and add these topics to your keyword list. In my case it is a bit difficult
Yes, wikipedia can also help a lot with finding keywords. Search for related words and see if you can add useful keywords to your list.
6. Find popular topics in forums or on Quora
7. Use Keywords everywhere
A really great tool to find keywords is Keywords Everywhere - after adding it to your browser it is showing you the search volume for your keyword and the price for it. You even get a great list with related keywords directly in your google search results. From this step I will add some keywords to my list: jobs in sports || sports engineering jobs || sports startups 2019 || company xyz jobs
8. Use tools like Ubersuggest and Google’s keyword planer
Another really great tool is Ubersuggest - you can just type in a keyword and Ubersuggest gives you some ideas with a helpful metrics.
My final list of keywords for now looks like this.
Sportstech || Sportstech Jobs || Sportstechnology Jobs || Sports Analytics Jobs || eSports Jobs || Fantasy sports Jobs || Sports Jobs || Global sport jobs || sports technology careers || sports tech jobs city xyz || remote eSports jobs || jobs in sports || sports engineering jobs || sports startups 2019 || company xyz jobs || sports startups
Where to add Keywords?
There are several ways you can add your keywords on your website. Here are the most common ones:
- Page Titles
- Meta descriptions
- Link Anchor text
- Social Media profile
Furthermore you need to conceptualize your content and add the keywords to items such as :
- An article
- A blog post
- A product page
- An index or directory of links (to other pages on your site or around the web)
- An authoritative guide
- An infographic
- A video
- A look at other job boards
- At the end I also want to give you some examples of popular job boards and their meta description.
